As India suffered a heartbreak at World Cup final against Australia after a 10-match winning streak in the tournament, emotions ran high at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. There were tears and hugs on and off the field as the players came to terms with the defeat.
One of the enduring images of the final match is a photo of actor Anushka Sharma hugging her husband Virat Kohli after the match. Actor Athiya Shetty, wife of KL Rahul, too is seen in the frame, standing behind Sharma.
Captain Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj were seen in tears on the field, shortly after the match ended. Siraj was seen being consoled by teammate Jasprit Bumrah.
Kohli, India’s star batsman, ended the match having set a new record for most runs - 765 - at a single World Cup. Last week, he had scored a record-breaking 50th one-day international (ODI) century in India's 70-run semi-final win over New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
A video of Kohli coming out to the balcony of the Wankhede dressing room, trying to look for Anushka Sharma on the upper tier, has won the hearts of their fans.
"It feels like a dream. Too good to be true. Sachin was there in the stands, my hero. My life partner and all these fans at the Wankhede,” the cricketer had said of Sachin Tendulkar and Anushka Sharma watching his moment of history.
Another video from the India-Netherlands match in Bengaluru showed Kohli looking towards the stands, with Sharma’s million-dollar reaction winning hearts on the internet. The actor was seen cheering for her husband happily. The couple also got tears in their eyes and the entire country witnessed the historic moment.
